Meugang is a tradition consume the beef or buffalo within a certain amount to be eaten together for celebrate the big day of islam particularly in the beginning of Ramadan, Idul Fitri and Idul Adha. Do we know the derivation of meugang? According to Amir Hamzah (2009), in the time of Sultan Iskandar Muda (1607-1636), Sultan and the rich man are always slaughtering cows and buffaloes as the gratitude to Allah because they can meet of Islam big day. Then, the meat was slaughtered and hanged on the gang thereafter was visited by many people to take their allotments, Because of that appears term “Makmu that gang nyan” which was later shortened to be “makmeugang” and eventually became “meugang”only.
Then, how meugang in modern time? Meugang in modern time are no more distributed free of charge as in the Sultanate of Aceh, people buy meat of meugang with their own money and for citizens who are less able, they usually get compensation for their meugang from Imum meunasah and a generous neighbor so that they do not feel too worry. Meugang taught us some value of life there are: 1 - the value of togetherness, all levels family in Aceh ate the same menu on that day. 2 – the value of gratitude, as special muslim we present special menu as a proof of our gratitude for coming special day in islam.
In summary, meugang is a tradition consume the beef or buffalo to be eaten together for celebrate the beginning of Ramadan, Idul Fitr and Idul Adha. It has existed since the time of Sultan Iskandar Muda, meugang taught us many things going the other side of life, so that we should preserve this distinctive tradition.
